2019 Patrick J. Kelly Cup Champions

Well, who could've seen this coming back in October when the Growlers played their first game in franchise history?

First of all, let me start by saying Congrats to the Newfoundland Growlers! You have pulled something off in the ECHL that no team has done since 1990, which is win the Kelly Cup in your outright expansion season. You also have become the first Canadian team in ECHL history to win an ECHL Championship. I heard it's the first pro sports championship in Newfoundland and Labrador history as well, so enjoy this!

Watching the series online was an absolute blast and hearing the St. Johns crowd erupt as the final horn sounded gave me absolute chills, may have also been the air conditioning though. Seeing Zach O'Brien, a Newfoundland native, being awarded the MVP award for posting the second most goals in a single playoff in ECHL history was very heart-warming. Goaltender Michael Garteig gets a massive honorable mention from me, as his play throughout the Cup Finals was incredible and the Growlers certainly wouldn't be celebrating without his repeated stellar performances.

Props to the Toledo Walleye as well, who didn't go down without a fight and helped make every minute of this series an exciting one to watch. Their fans were incredible, breaking arena attendance records left and right.

Overall, another exciting Kelly Cup Finals and another ECHL season are in the books. Series like these are one of the many reasons why I love minor professional hockey. Once again, congrats to the Newfoundland Growlers, your 2019 Kelly Cup Champions!
