Columbus has returned to pro hockey!
Once called the Snake Pit, will the Columbus Civic Center be called the Dragons' Lair now? Asking since Columbus is getting pro hockey back in the form of the FPHL expansion team, the Columbus River Dragons. After losing the Cottonmouths in May 2017 after 21 seasons of hockey and soon after getting burned by a failed ownership bid to remain SPHL, the fans in the Columbus metro area will be joining an ever-growing FPHL beginning with the 2019-20 season. Now, this isn't the first time a team playing in Columbus has been called the River Dragons (or any variant of it), as, from 2001-2005, an NBA D-League team by the name Columbus Riverdragons played at the CCC. For hockey fans in the Fountain City, they hope this River Dragons team is here to stay. Up top, former Carolina Thunderbirds GM and former FHL Executive of the Year Scott Brand has been named the River Dragons President and General Manager. Not only that, but former Cottonmouths player and coach Jerome Bechard has been named VP of Community Relations. With this, the River Dragons have a firm base up top and solid branding around the team that can hopefully help revitalize pro hockey in Columbus.
