Growlers, City of St.. John's, and SJSEL Agree to 10-Year Lease
September 25, 2019
Today, the Newfoundland Growlers hockey team and the St. John's Edge basketball team have reached a 10-year lease extension that is currently an Agreement in Principle with the City of St. John's and St. John's Sports and Entertainment Ltd. (SJSEL). With this deal, it would keep both the Growlers and Edge through the 2029-2030 season.
Previously, any lease agreements between St. John's and their professional teams was capped at a five-year term, which makes this deal a first of it's kind for not only the city but the entirety of the province. SJSEL will continue to manage both Mile One Centre and the St. John's Convention Centre.
The lease agreement comes after many months of negotiations between the different parties, which caused many to suspect this season would be the last for the Growlers in the city of St. John's due to tensions being high and negotiations being at a standstill several times. Also, last week the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL parent of the Growlers) held training camp sessions and played a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators at Mile One Centre, which brought positive national attention to the city and arena.
Honestly, I was hoping for the best, but I prepped for the worst. In a turn of events, this actually turned out great for the fans in St. John's who have been burned a few times in the past by teams leaving so soon after they arrived. As for the defending Kelly Cup champs, this now means they can get back to business on the ice without any distractions.
